How to Draw a Cute Baby Penguin in 6 Simple Steps (Interactive Draw-Along)
There is nothing in the animal kingdom quite as heart-melting as a waddling baby penguin! With their round bellies, fluffy tuxedos, and little paddle flippers outstretched for balance, penguins are one of the most rewarding creatures for beginners and kids to draw. Best of all, you don’t need complex anatomy skills to bring one to life — just basic geometric curves and our step-by-step formula!
In this beginner-friendly tutorial from Donald Clark’s classic How to Draw Animals in Simple Steps, we break down the Antarctic chick into 6 progressive building blocks. We begin with the expressive eyes and cheerful beak, build the chubby cheeks and tuxedo hood around them, and finish with a plump belly and webbed feet.

Step-by-Step Drawing Guide (Detailed Breakdown) 📖
Prefer working on paper or in your physical sketchbook? Here is the complete step-by-step visual breakdown with pro artist tips for each stage:

Step 1: Start with Expressive Eyes & Beak 👀
Begin in the upper middle area of your drawing area. Draw two friendly round ovals for the eyes. Inside each eye, shade in a large dark pupil while leaving two small white circles untouched — one large highlight in the upper corner and one smaller glint at the bottom. This gives your penguin an innocent, sparkling gaze.
Between and slightly below the eyes, sketch a small downward-pointing triangular beak with rounded edges. Add a gentle curved smile line underneath to give your penguin a cheerful greeting!

Step 2: Wrap the Head & Chubby Cheeks 🥚
Now wrap a smooth, egg-shaped contour around the facial features. Notice how the top of the head is a gentle dome, while the sides flare outwards right at cheek level to give that plump, plush baby chick appearance.
Tool Tip: If drawing freehand circles feels tricky, select the Circle or Oval tool in our studio above, drag out a light circle around the face, and then trace over the cheeks with your pen!

Step 3: Define the White Mask & Tuxedo Cap 🎭
The defining signature of a penguin is its distinct feathered tuxedo hood. From the center top of the forehead, draw two elegant arched lines swooping down on each side of the eyes, meeting neatly at the bridge of the beak.
This separates the crown (which will be dark slate/charcoal) from the adorable white face patch. Keep these two arches balanced and symmetrical.

Step 4: Draw the Plump Body & Concentric Belly 🐧
Starting right below the cheeks, sweep down an elongated egg-shaped oval for the penguin’s body. The body should be about 1.5 times the height of the head, giving that cute, stocky toddler proportion.
Inside the body, sketch a second concentric oval running parallel to the outer contour. This creates the dark outer feather rim and defines the bright, fluffy white belly patch in the center.

Step 5: Add Waddling Flipper Wings 🌊
Penguins can’t fly in the air, but their flippers are built like underwater airplane wings! Draw two smooth paddle flippers extending out from the upper shoulders.
Angle them gently outwards and downwards with rounded tips. Outstretched flippers give the drawing an instant sense of joyful motion, as if your penguin is happily waddling across an ice floe!

Step 6: Anchor with Webbed Feet (Completed Line Art!) 👣
Give your penguin a steady foundation! At the base of the body, draw two wide, paddle-shaped webbed feet pointing outward in opposite directions. Add two shallow indentations on each foot to indicate the individual toes.
Step back and take a look — your line art is 100% complete! Notice how every part fits together naturally with smooth, balanced curves.

Colouring & Finishing Your Masterpiece 🎨
Now comes the most satisfying part — bringing your penguin to life with color! Here is the classic arctic palette:
- Dark Tuxedo Suit: Use a rich charcoal black or dark slate gray (
#334155) for the head hood, outer body rim, and flipper wings. Leaving it slightly lighter than pure pitch-black allows your ink lines to show clearly! - Beak & Webbed Feet: Fill with a warm sunshine gold (
#f59e0b) and add a touch of tangerine orange (#f97316) along the bottom edges for warmth and depth. - Belly & Cheeks: Keep the face mask and central tummy clean white, or shade a hint of very pale ice blue (
#e0f2fe) along the outer edges for realistic Antarctic lighting. - Rosy Cheeks (Optional): Add two soft blush-pink ovals on the cheeks for maximum kawaii charm!
