How to Draw a Noble Cartoon Lion in 6 Simple Steps (Interactive Draw-Along)
Learn how to draw a noble cartoon lion in 6 simple, step-by-step stages! Whether you are filling your daily sketchbook, creating savanna animal illustrations for kids, or looking for an easy beginner drawing tutorial, this masterclass breaks down the King of the Jungle into accessible basic shapes, powerful muscular gesture curves, and a magnificent flowing mane.

Why Drawing a Cartoon Lion is the Ultimate Sketchbook Project
Lions are beloved worldwide as symbols of courage, wisdom, and royalty. In animation and storybook illustration—from classic savanna adventures to modern cartoon styles—capturing a lion comes down to understanding three essential design principles:
- The Royal Posture: Unlike quick prey animals like our cartoon gazelle, a resting lion exudes calm power. A sweeping S-curve along the spine communicates relaxed confidence.
- Volume & Armature: By starting with simple geometric foundations (circles, ovals, and teardrops), you never have to worry about lopsided anatomy. If you practiced our 4 magic shapes guide, you’ll recognize circles and teardrops doing all the heavy lifting!
- The Frame of the Mane: A lion’s mane acts like a luxurious frame for the face. Soft curved points flowing downward over the shoulders give the character an instantly recognizable storybook silhouette.

Step-by-Step Cartoon Lion Tutorial
Step 1: The Head Circle & Flowing Spine Gesture

Every great animal drawing begins with rhythm and posture! Sketch a clean circular cranium near the upper-right area of your paper. Attach a rectangular, tapering muzzle wedge pointing outward to form the snout, and cap it with two rounded ear domes.
Next, draw a sweeping, graceful S-curve starting behind the ears, sloping downward along the back, and flattening out toward the rear where the tail will originate. Keep your pencil strokes light and loose!
Step 2: Muscular Chest Mass & Front Leg Pillars

Lions carry impressive upper-body strength. Connect the neck line down toward a broad, rounded chest oval. From the shoulder girdle, drop two tapering teardrop shapes downward to form the upper limbs of the front legs.
Notice how the front leg closest to us is drawn slightly larger than the far leg—this creates immediate 3D depth on your flat sheet of paper.
Step 3: Resting Haunches, Flank & Paw Cylinders

Now anchor the lion in a calm, resting pose. Toward the back of the spine, sketch an angled oval for the thigh and a rounded heel joint resting on the ground. Connect the underbelly with a smooth horizontal line joining the chest to the hind leg.
At the base of the front legs and back foot, sketch rounded rectangular cylinders for the big cat paws. Lions have massive paws that help balance their regal frame!
Step 4: Regal Facial Features & Paw Toes

Time to give your lion his memorable personality! Inside the facial circle, draw a soft triangular dark nose on the muzzle tip and a gentle curved smile line extending back along the jaw. Add two or three whisker dots on the muzzle pad.
Place an almond-shaped eye with a dark pupil and a noble, thick brow arching over it. On the paw cylinders, draw vertical curved notches to separate the rounded toes.
Step 5: The Magnificent Flowing Mane & Tufted Tail

This is where the magic happens! Outline the lion’s crowning glory: a dramatic, flowing mane starting high above the forehead, sweeping behind the ears, and cascading down around the chest like a regal cape.
Extend a long, slender tail looping gently from the rear rump along the ground, ending in a classic paintbrush-shaped dark tuft. Trace over your favorite structural lines with confident pen strokes.
Step 6: Inking, Shading & Warm Savanna Colors

Erase all construction guidelines with a clean kneaded eraser. Now bring your lion to life with warm African savanna colors! Use warm tawny gold for the body fur, glowing amber and rich chestnut brown for the mane, and creamy ivory around the muzzle and eyes.
Add a soft shadow beneath the paws and haunches to ground your character firmly on the rock. Congratulations, your noble cartoon lion is complete! ✨
